Pond Walks
Welcome to the Illiana Garden Pond Walk 2005
Highland, Indiana
House #4
Date of Creation: 2003 • Size of Pond: 7' x 9' x 23"
Number of Gallons: 1,100 • Inhabitants: 20 Shubunkin goldfish & a frog
The pond was built in 2003 by Cutter's Edge Inc. It is 7' wide, 9' long and 23" at its deepest. The pump moves 3,000 gallons per hour. There is a double waterfall and a brass frog spitter. Some of the unique features of the pond include a fish cave where the fish can go to cool off in the summer and keep warm in the winter. The pond has large fieldstones along the edge and waterfalls and at various levels in the water. It then has smaller river rock covering the liner. It was designed with pockets that the water plants are planted into thereby eliminating pots. It makes for a clean visual effect. The view through our living room window is spectacular.
A weeping cherry is planted along one side accompanied by perennials - hosta, lavender, stonecrop sedum, several grasses (drawf maiden grass, blue fescue, fountain grass). Rock garden plants are tucked into the large stones surrounding the waterfalls. This pond is the focal point of the backyard. The area is enclosed by a 14' x 36' picket fence with lights hidden in the fence posts. A handmade cedar arbor with a swing makes a wonderful place to sit and view the pond and gardens. There's additional lighting in the water and hidden spotlights to show off the waterfall and plants at night.
